How to create parent-child variations on Amazon (without splitting the family)

A variation family is one detail page doing the work of twelve. The parent is a virtual ASIN with no inventory and no price. It exists only to hold the children together. The children are the real, buyable products, and the variation theme is the rule that says how they differ: size, color, scent, number of items.

Done right, a shopper picks a size from a dropdown and never leaves the page, and your reviews pool in one place. Done wrong, Amazon splits the family, refuses a child or quietly removes the whole relationship. Most of the wrong turns are avoidable, and Amazon writes the rules down. They are just spread across six help pages. Here they are on one.

Part 01

Step by step

9 steps, in the order Seller Central asks for them.

  1. 01Check that the products truly belong together

Amazon's test: the products should have fundamentally the same title, serve the same function and differ only by attributes like size, color or flavor. A laptop bag and a laptop backpack fail. So does a charging cable next to a portable charger. If you would not put them under one title, do not put them under one parent.

  2. 02Match the non-varying attributes before you start

Brand, product type, item type keyword, model name and style must be identical on every child. Children with different values for these grouping attributes cannot share a family. Fix them in the listing data first, because this is the most common reason a child refuses to join.

  3. 03Pick a theme your category actually offers

Themes come from a fixed list per product type, and you cannot change the theme after the family exists. Clothing varies by size or color. Pet Supplies can vary by flavor, scent and quantity. Some product types allow two or three dimensions, such as Size and Color. If the Variations tab or theme dropdown never appears, your category does not support variations.

  4. 04Get a unique UPC or EAN and SKU for every child

The parent has no product identifier, because nobody can buy it. Each child needs its own UPC or EAN and its own seller SKU. Products with a Product ID exemption cannot be mixed with branded products in one family. Count your children before you count your barcodes.

Source: Seller Central Help, Create and manage product variations

  5. 05Build it in the blank form (up to 250 children)

Go to Catalog, then Add Products, select Blank form and click Start. Enter the item name and confirm the product type. On the Product identity tab, check This product has variations and select the themes. Fill the required fields marked with an asterisk, then open the Variations tab, choose a variation type and click Continue.

  6. 06Fill the Variations matrix, then Save and finish

Each row is one child. Enter its UPC or EAN, a SKU (Amazon generates one if you leave it blank), condition, price and quantity. Complete the required fields on the remaining tabs and click Save and finish. Leave price and quantity off the parent. It is a container, not a product.

Source: Seller Central Help, Create and manage product variations

  7. 07Use the product spreadsheet for big or multiple families

For more than 250 children, go to Add Products, select Spreadsheet and generate a template for your product type. Mark the parent row parent, choose the theme, and give every child row child, the parent's SKU in Parent SKU and the same theme. Upload it from Add products via upload. A family can hold up to 4,000 children.

  8. 08Or group listings you already have

In Manage All Inventory, open a child's Edit listing, go to the Variations tab and click Create variations for this listing. Choose the theme, enter its values, then set the product identifier to ASIN and enter the existing ASIN and SKU for each row. Existing ASINs keep their sales history and reviews, which Amazon says helps search relevancy.

  9. 09Wait, then check the detail page

Amazon says family creation takes 24 to 48 hours after a successful submission, though families often merge in under 15 minutes. Reviews can take 96 hours to share, and up to a week during Prime Day or the holiday season. Wait a full 24 hours before contacting Selling Partner Support about a missing child.

Part 02 Calculator

Try the numbers: Variation family size and barcode check

Runs in your browser only. The 250 and 4,000 limits are Amazon's. Leave the third dimension at 1 if your theme has only one or two.

No. 1 Variation family size and barcode check

How to use it. Enter how many options you sell in each dimension of your theme and how many unique UPCs or EANs you already own. We show how many children the family needs, how many barcodes you are short, how many SKUs to create including the parent, and how much room is left under Amazon's 4,000-child display limit.

For example, 5 sizes.

For example, 4 colors. Use 1 if none.

Only some product types allow 3D themes.

The parent needs none.

Turn on JavaScript to see the math here, or follow the formulas below.

The math, and where it comes from
  • Amazon recommends the blank form for a single family of up to 250 child ASINs and the product spreadsheet above that, with up to 4,000 child ASINs per family.
  • Each child needs a unique UPC or EAN and a unique seller SKU. The parent has no product identifier but carries its own seller SKU in the spreadsheet.
  • Our arithmetic: children = first x second x third dimension. Barcodes needed = children minus barcodes owned. SKUs = children + 1. Room = 4,000 minus children.

Part 04

Tricks the help page buries

The lines in Amazon's own documentation that most sellers scroll past.

  1. 1The best seller is your storefront

Outside Clothing, Accessories & Luggage, Sporting Goods and Beauty, Amazon shows the best-selling child in search results and loads its detail page first, title and price included. Write every child's title and images as if it might be the one shoppers see.

Source: Seller Central Help, Variation display and customer experience

  2. 2Put the variation in the child title, not the parent

Amazon's guidelines say to add the variation value to each child's title and describe each child fully for browse and search. The parent title stays generic. Royal Blue T-Shirt M is a child. T-Shirt is the parent.

Source: Seller Central Help, Create and manage product variations

  3. 3Multipacks need the manufacturer's blessing

An item package quantity variation is only valid if the manufacturer made that multi-pack. For packs you sell in different counts, check whether your product type offers the US-only total product quantity theme, which uses unit count and number of packs.

Sources: Seller Central Help, Create and manage product variations, Seller Central Help, Variation theme for total product quantity

  4. 4Wrong theme means a new family

Amazon will not change a theme after creation. The fix is a new family with the correct theme, then moving the children over. Pick the theme as if you will live with it, because you will.

Sources: Seller Central Help, Troubleshoot product variations, Seller Central Help, Variation relationship FAQ

  5. 5Detach without losing the reviews

In Manage All Inventory, expand the family and use Detach from family on one child, or Ungroup Variation family on the parent. Children keep their sales history, reviews and ratings. Allow 15 minutes in your catalog and up to 24 hours on the detail page.

Source: Seller Central Help, Create and manage product variations

  6. 6Audit the family from a report

Request an Active Listings Report or All Listings Report under Reports, then Inventory Reports. Filter the Parent ASIN column to see every child and its color, size and other variation attributes in one spreadsheet.

Source: Seller Central Help, Variation relationship FAQ

  7. 7You cannot reorder the children

Amazon sets the order of variations automatically and does not take preferential sorting requests. Spend the energy on child images instead, since visual dimensions like color swap the images when a shopper picks one.

Questions sellers ask

Tap a question to open it.

What is a parent-child variation on Amazon?

A parent-child variation groups nearly identical products on one detail page. The parent ASIN is virtual, with no inventory or price. Each child ASIN is a buyable product, and the variation theme, such as size or color, defines how the children differ. Brand and product type must match across the family.

Sources: Seller Central Help, Product variations overview, Seller Central Help, Variation relationship FAQ

How many child ASINs can an Amazon variation family have?

Amazon does not display variation families with more than 4,000 child ASINs on the detail page. It recommends the blank form in Add Products for a single family of up to 250 children, and the product spreadsheet for larger families or for building several families at once.

Sources: Seller Central Help, Create and manage product variations, Seller Central Help, Troubleshoot product variations

Does the parent ASIN need a UPC?

No. The parent is a non-buyable ASIN, so it has no UPC or EAN, price or quantity. Each child needs its own unique UPC or EAN and its own seller SKU, unless the product has a Product ID exemption. Exempted products cannot be combined with branded products in one family.

Source: Seller Central Help, Create and manage product variations

Can I change the variation theme after creating the family?

No. Seller Central does not let you change a variation theme once the family exists. Amazon's fix is to create a new variation family with the correct theme and move your child ASINs into it, using the methods for adding new variants to existing families.

Sources: Seller Central Help, Variation relationship FAQ, Seller Central Help, Troubleshoot product variations

How long does it take for Amazon variations to show up?

Amazon says families and reviews often merge in under 15 minutes, while creation can take 24 to 48 hours after a successful submission. Review sharing after an update can take 96 hours, or up to a week during Prime Day or the holiday season. Wait 24 hours before contacting Support.

Sources: Seller Central Help, Variation relationship FAQ, Seller Central Help, Create and manage product variations, Seller Central Help, Troubleshoot product variations

Why did my child ASIN not join the variation family?

Amazon lists the usual causes: a missing attribute for the variation theme, two children with identical variation values, a theme that differs between parent and child, or a child already in another family. Inactive children or ones with no inventory also stay off the detail page.
