How to get approval to sell in a restricted category on Amazon
Some products on Amazon come with a velvet rope. You can see the listing, you can see the demand, and Seller Central still won't let you add an offer until Amazon has looked at your paperwork. Sellers call it getting ungated. Amazon calls it approval to sell, and it exists so the products in its store are safe, authentic and meet regulations.
The good news is that the process is the same whether the rope is around one ASIN, a whole brand or an entire category. Find out what is restricted, gather the right documents before you click anything, apply once, then manage the answer from one dashboard. This guide covers all four, plus the one reply you can't appeal.
Part 01
Step by step
7 steps, in the order Seller Central asks for them.
- 01Search the product in Add Products
In Seller Central, go to Add Products and search for the item you want to sell. For a new product that isn't in the catalog yet, search for similar items to see which restrictions are likely to apply.

- 02Read the status next to the result
Sell this product means no approval is needed. Apply to sell means approval is required. Not Available means the product can't be listed by you. Click Show limitations to see the detailed requirements before you go further.

- 03Work out what kind of restriction it is
Approval can be required for an individual ASIN, a brand, a brand within a specific category, a whole category or a sub-category. Some products need more than one approval, so a yes on the category doesn't always cover the brand.

- 04Gather the documents first
Prepare purchase invoices dated within 180 days, clear photos showing all sides of the product, a brand authorization letter if one applies, safety certifications when required, and commercial liability insurance documents for certain categories.

- 05Click Apply to sell and complete the form
Back on the search result, click Apply to sell, fill in the application form and upload the documents Amazon asks for. Make sure the product you apply for is the product you'll actually list, since Amazon expects listings to be accurately categorized and described.

- 06Wait for the review
Amazon's help page puts the review at 2 to 7 business days. Use the time to check your listing details and, for categories with enhanced safety listing requirements, your insurance policy.

- 07Manage it in Selling Applications
Go to Selling Applications to review drafts, check the status and submit new documents. Keep an eye on Performance notifications and Account health too, because selling privileges can change later if new restrictions are added or required insurance documents expire.

Tricks the help page buries
The lines in Amazon's own documentation that most sellers scroll past.
- 1Check before you buy, not after
A product that says Apply to sell today needs paperwork you can only get by buying from a supplier, so look up the status in Add Products before you place a big order. For a product Amazon doesn't carry yet, search similar items to see the likely restrictions.

- 2Watch the 180-day clock on invoices
Amazon asks for purchase invoices dated within 180 days. An invoice from last spring may already be too old by the time you apply, so time your application to a recent purchase.

- 3One product can need two yeses
Restrictions stack. Amazon lists individual ASINs, brands, brands within a category, categories and sub-categories as separate kinds of restriction, and says some products require multiple approvals. If you're approved for the category and still blocked, check the brand.

- 4Insurance is part of the approval now
If your products fall in a category with enhanced safety listing requirements, Amazon requires commercial liability insurance of at least USD 1 million per occurrence and aggregate, written on an occurrence basis, with Amazon.com Services LLC and its affiliates and assignees named as additional insured, regardless of monthly gross proceeds.

- 5Don't get clever with categories
Amazon says listings that are purposefully inaccurate, miscategorized or deceptively described to get around its category, product and listing restrictions can lead to corrective action, including termination of selling privileges. Ungating the honest way is slower for a week and cheaper for a career.

What does ungating mean on Amazon?
Ungating is the seller term for getting Amazon's approval to sell a product that requires it. In Seller Central, a product that needs approval shows Apply to sell in Add Products. You apply, upload documents such as invoices and product photos, and Amazon reviews the application before you can list.

Can I appeal a your account does not qualify decision?
No. Amazon says that message means you can't sell the product, the decision can't be appealed, and Selling Partner Support can't provide additional details. The practical move is to choose a different product or brand.
Source: Seller Central Help, Categories and products that require approval
Can I lose approval after I get it?
Yes. Amazon says your ability to sell can change if new restrictions are added to existing products, your account receives performance notifications, product safety or compliance requirements change, or required insurance documents expire or become invalid. Check Performance notifications and Account health regularly.
